The best places to propose on the French Riviera

The Côte d'Azur is one of the world's most romantic coasts — medieval villages perched over the sea, hidden sea-view gardens, pastel harbours where the light turns gold at the end of the day. It is the kind of place that seems designed for a single, unforgettable question.

As a proposal photographer based in Nice, I've quietly captured "yes" moments all along this coast, from cliff-top terraces at dawn to harbour steps at dusk. Over the years I've learned that the right place matters less than the right place at the right time — the same terrace can feel magical at sunrise and crowded by mid-morning. Here are my five favourite places to propose on the French Riviera, and exactly how to plan each one so the moment feels effortless.

1. Èze — the village in the sky

Èze is a medieval stone village clinging to the rock some 400 metres above the Mediterranean. Its narrow, car-free lanes wind upward to the Jardin Exotique, whose terraced gardens open onto a 360° panorama of the sea and the coastline — arguably the most cinematic backdrop on the entire Riviera. There is a reason it feels like a film set: it genuinely is the village in the sky.

The single best spot is the upper terrace of the Jardin Exotique, and the best time is sunrise — the light is soft and warm, the gardens are almost empty, and you have the panorama to yourselves. 2. Cap Ferrat — secluded luxury

Cap Ferrat is the Riviera at its most discreet: a green peninsula of pine-shaded coastal paths, private villas and the formal gardens of the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild. It is intimate, quiet and unmistakably elegant — perfect if you want the moment to feel private rather than public.

Aim for golden hour on the coastal trail (the Sentier du Littoral), where the path opens onto turquoise coves with almost no one around. Tip: combine the proposal with a gentle walk down to Plage de Passable afterwards for a glass of something to celebrate, looking back across the water. Dedicated guide coming soon.

3. Villefranche-sur-Mer — the pastel harbour

Villefranche-sur-Mer sits on one of the prettiest bays on the whole coast. The old town tumbles down to the water in ochre and rose facades, and the deep natural harbour glows warmly as the sun drops. It feels romantic without being grand — lived-in, colourful and real.

Propose at the waterfront at dusk, when the pastel houses catch the last light and the boats sit still on the water. Tip: the stone steps leading down by the harbour frame the sea beautifully and give a natural, slightly elevated spot for the moment — and for the photos straight after. Dedicated guide coming soon.

4. Cannes — glamour & the islands

Cannes brings a touch of glamour. You can keep it classic along La Croisette with the palms and the bay, or climb up to Le Suquet, the old town, for a sweeping view over the rooftops and harbour. For something more secret, take the short boat across to Île Sainte-Marguerite and propose among the pines with the sea on every side.

The best time here is late afternoon, when the light is rich and the islands are at their calmest. Tip: if you choose Sainte-Marguerite, check the last ferry time before you go so the celebration isn't rushed. Dedicated guide coming soon.

5. Menton — lemons & pastel calm

Menton, right on the Italian border, is the "pearl of France" — sun-warmed, Italian-tinged and noticeably calmer than its glamorous neighbours. Its old town rises in warm pastel layers, and there are fewer crowds, which makes it ideal for a couple who wants beauty without the bustle.

The view from the steps of the Basilica of Saint-Michel-Archange, looking out over the rooftops to the sea, is quietly spectacular. Menton is especially lovely in winter light, when the air is clear and the famous lemons are ripening — and if you time it right, the town's Fête du Citron brings a gentle, celebratory buzz to the streets without overwhelming them. How to plan a surprise proposal

Wherever you choose, a little planning is what makes the moment feel calm rather than nervous. A few things I always recommend:

• Scout the spot and the timing with a local photographer. Someone who shoots the coast every week knows where the light lands, where the crowds gather, and the quiet corner that works on the day you've chosen.
• Plan around golden hour. The hour after sunrise and before sunset gives the warm, flattering light the Riviera is famous for — and, at sunrise, far fewer people.
• Build in discretion. Blend in, agree a small signal with your photographer (a phrase or a gesture) so they're ready the second you kneel, and keep the ring somewhere easy to reach.
• Have a weather backup. The coast enjoys over 300 sunny days a year, but it pays to agree a sheltered alternative spot or a flexible time in case the forecast turns.
